Gerês in the North of Portugal has so much greenery that gives you peace of mind and tranquillity to enjoy the time there. National Peneda Park in Gerês not only offers lush vegetation but there are a lot of different animals and species. Wild animals like wolves, boars, badgers, otters, deers and wild horses and easier to admire, are like cows with long horns, goats, and native sheep with a shepherd dog.
Places to visit in National Peneda Park – Day trip to Gerês
Ponte da Misarela
Starting the day with a hike to Misarela. The hike is not that long from the parking but the trail is mixed with easy parts to slippery parts. But arriving at the bridge Misarela and the waterfall gives you the feeling of enjoyment.
Miradouro de Fafião
Miradouro de Fafião is another spectacular view to visit in the National Peneda Park, Gerês. A small hike to reach the viewpoint. Therefore the trail is easy and it is signed to follow.
Moreover leaving the Miradouro de Fafião is a scenic driving route to making the way to the next destination.
Cascata de Fecha de Barjas
Cascata de Fecha de Barajas is a very touristic place. It is a very beautiful place that can’t be missed. The water is tumbling over rocky cliffs into a pool, accessible via a steep trail in the national park of Gerês. Here one can swim in the pool and enjoy the stream sounds.
Praia da Barragem
Along the scenic road, I drove to Praia da Barragem. I was lucky that it was a hot day in November and I had the chance to swim in the lake. This is an option if the previous place would have been very busy with tourists.
Church São Bento da Porta Aberta
While driving to church São Bento da Porta Aberta, for the last destination of the day, there are also some places to stop and enjoy the viewpoints of nature. Ending the day at São Bento da Porta Aberta, that is to say, the second largest sanctuary in Portugal that attracts a lot of pilgrims. For instance, it has a nice beautiful view from the church and the place has a tranquil atmosphere.
